The Fall and The Undertones were among John Peel’s favourite bands – and both have agreed to appear at Epic Studios, in Magdalen Street, on Wednesday, October 10.

Norwich band Bearsuit, another favourite of Mr Peel, and Dingus Khan, of Manningtree, Essex, are also included in the fundraiser line-up.

Money collected from the gig is being donated to the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts in Stowmarket.

BBC radio favourite Mr Peel, who died in 2004, is revered for his dedication to supporting new bands.

His widow Sheila Ravenscroft said the gig will provide much-needed funds.

She said: “I’m so pleased that The Fall and The Undertones have agreed to play as everybody knows that they were two bands very close to John’s heart and we should raise some money for the new venue.”

The fundraiser takes place the day before Norwich Sound and Vision, which this year also hosts the first John Peel Festival of New Music as part of its programme.

Stuart Hobday, Norwich Arts Centre director, said: “This fundraiser seemed like an appropriate way to capture the affection that is still out there for John and to not forget his direct contribution to British musical life in helping bands, such as The Fall, The Undertones and Bearsuit.”

All of the bands had agreed to waive their fees for the gig.

Michael Bradley, The Undertones’ bassist, said: “It’s fairly obvious we owe a lot to John and it’s an honour to be asked to support the centre.“

Tickets, £20 in advance or £22 on the door, are available from the Norwich Arts Centre on 01603 660352 or online via www.norwichartscentre.co.uk
