While many people choose to do sponsored sports events and bake cakes to raise money for charity, a south Norfolk girl has swapped her long hair for a short crop to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Spurred on by the cheers and support from her friends, who spilled out of the school hall, Jenny Andrews, who has always had long hair, had a dramatic number four hair cut.

The 13-year-old Wymondham High School pupil raised more than £1,500 when her friend, Joanne Thatcher from Aristocuts, cut her hair in the school hall on Friday, November 16.

The Year 8 pupil, who lives in Harts Farm in Wymondham, said: “I am glad I went through with it because I was very nervous.

“I think I look like a boy but I have raised loads of money. I wanted to do this because I had just turned 13 so I am a teenager and it’s something that I can relate to.”

Jenny thanked everyone for their sponsorship and support.

Staff and students passed a hat around to collect extra funds while her hair was being chopped off.

School principal, Victoria Musgrave, praised Jenny’s determination to highlight a worthy cause. “She’s so young, she’s in Year 8, and she’s prepared to make a statement.

“What Jenny has done is absolutely superb.”

Mrs Musgrave added Jenny was a “very good, hardworking, conscientious student”.

Her dad, David, said: “I know what she’s like, she’s very spontaneous. We are very proud of her, she looks beautiful.”

Her mum, Angie De Sousa, said her daughter was brave.
