Instructors and clubs have pledged hours of their time to offer Norfolk families free swimming lessons this summer.

Since we launched our Summer of Swimming campaign this week, we’ve had plenty of offers of free lessons and courses to see more young people learn how to swim.

Our drive hopes to push up the number of Norfolk swimmers and promote better awareness of keeping safe in water.

We’ll be sharing offers we receive through these pages. So far, they include:

• Hurricanes Swimming Club is offering 12 free places for its lessons at Drayton Junior School for this term, up until July. To find out more, contact 01603 412594.

• Hannah Smith runs the Ready Steady Splash swim school and is willing to offer free swimming lessons during the holidays if she can find a suitable pool. For more information, call 07557982406.

• Norwich Penguins will give children and adults five free swimming lessons when they buy five, at a choice of 12 Norwich school swimming pools. To sign up and for terms and conditions, email

Alex Pinniger, head coach at the Penguins, said: “We are really excited to support the EDP’s campaign to increase participation in swimming in Norwich and get people safe for summer.”

Paralympic swimmer Jessica-Jane Applegate, from Burgh Castle, near Great Yarmouth, swims for the University of East Anglia (UEA) City of Norwich Swimming Club, the Penguins’ parent club.

She encouraged people to take the “first steps to facing the water”.

• If you’re able to lend a hand, please email education correspondent Lauren Cope on or call 01630 772313.
