Most history lessons don’t involve birds of prey, a jester and weapons - but that’s what will be on the agenda for students at Wymondham High Academy when they take part in a Tudor day as part of their history course.

From Monday, June 16 to Wednesday, June 18, nearly 250 students aged 11 to 12 will get to grips with Tudor history at Wymondham Abbey.

The lessons will be followed by a free event open to the public on Wednesday night, where proud parents and those living nearby will get a chance to see what the youngsters have been up to - with a hog roast and beer tent on hand.

Throughout the week, students will get to experience a falconry display using a celebrity warhorse ridden by Russell Crowe in Robin Hood, question a Tudor soldier on his weapons and armour and join an acting troupe to re-enact King Arthur legends.

The line-up will also include a jester, musicians with stories of Medieval dance and music and stained-glass window making.

Duncan Rowe, history teacher, said: “The visit to Wymondham Abbey is a fantastic opportunity to really bring history to life for our students. Through meeting experts in historical re-enactment history leaps off the page and is something that they can learn about through directly participating.

“It’s a real highlight of the teaching year and staff and students alike are eagerly anticipating the event and keeping fingers crossed for some sunny weather!”

The event will be held at Wymondham Abbey on Church Street, and will run from 5pm to 8pm.
