Emily Ward scooped the prize, which has been awarded for the last four years by the paediatric team within the hospital. The student won the award for her presentation about a rare complication of an ear infection in a child.

Nandu Thalange, NNUH paediatric consultant, said: “The primary purpose of the prize is to encourage medical students to explore an area of child health in more detail and perhaps to think about paediatrics as a career choice. We look for originality of thought, clarity of expression and presentation and ability to handle questions - Emily excelled in all of these areas.”

The prize is funded from royalties from the textbook “Essentials of Paediatrics” written by staff at the NNUH.
