A new T-shirt has been launched to raise awareness of the dangers of sky lanterns to people, property, livestock and the environment.

Creators say the lanterns can be responsible for the slow and painful death of a cow or other grazing livestock and fires that can destroy homes.

The warning comes ahead of Chinese New Year on Friday January 31, when there will be an expected upsurge in the use of lanterns.

The T-shirts have been launched by Country Land and Business Association Limited who have called for local authorities to renew licence policies to prohibit sky lanterns at some events.

They have also called for a ban on council-owned land.

CLA eastern regional director Nicola Currie said: “With such a large amount of lanterns being purchased, and ultimately released, it is extremely likely the number of serious incidents caused by these flying bonfires is going to increase substantially.

“I’m hoping that the release of this T-shirt and the continued backing of our stance by farmers groups such as #clubhectare will help the CLA keep the dangers of sky lanterns firmly in the public eye and help us push for a ban.”

The T-shirts are £6.75 each and 50p per sale will be donated to the charity RABI. To buy contact @sunkfarmer on Twitter.

  • These lanterns are stupidly dangerous. I know people who use them at family gatherings and they just won't believe that they could be lethal. They call them a "bit of fun". We have had them come down in our horses field right beside bales of hay and straw. In the summer it's even worse when fields are tinder dry.
