A north Suffolk petrol station has turned back the hands of time and brought back a bit of personalised customer service.

Once a week on a Wednesday, including today, from noon to 2pm, Hammonds petrol station in Halesworth has a member of staff on hand to fill up people’s cars for them, clean their headlights, wash the windscreen and check the tyres.

They brought it in to help elderly drivers and it is said to be proving very popular.

Staff call it “My Wednesday Walkabout”.

In an age of faceless automated supermarket tills and credit card transactions, such personalised service is relatively rare.

Milkmen are dying out, the “Corona Man” who used to deliver squash to your door is a distant memory and there are fewer streets that now catch sight of a fish van.

Can you think of any other traditions which have died out? Does the petrol station in the area where you live offer a personalised service? Email kate.scotter@archant.co.uk.

  • I rather like the idea of someone coming out to serve you with petrol, clean lights etc. Call me old-fashioned but it helps with keeping people in work. I have my milk delivered for a similar reason - to help keep the milkman in work - and the milk tastes better and the supplier is paid enough to run their business. I also remember the laundry man bringing freshly laundered and ironed sheets around which Mum had arranged to be done. There was also the baker coming around as well.

  • IT depends what you want from life , there is still a lot of good personal service to be had if you're willing to pay for it. Lack of service is a direct result of most people only wanting goods & services at the lowest possible price. People get what they deserve in the main.
