An inquest has been opened into the death of a Newton Flotman man who died after being struck by a train.

Terence Reeve, 76, a widower who lived at St Mary’s Close, was pronounced dead on Thursday, September 6 at Newton Flotman railway crossing.

Norfolk coroner William Armstrong, who opened an inquest in Norwich today, said the driver of a train on the Norwich to London line approached the crossing at Newton Flotman on the morning of September 6 and saw a person on the track but it was impossible to avoid striking him.

The emergency services were called but Mr Reeve was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post mortem examination has been carried out with a preliminary report stating cause of death as head, spinal, chest, abdominal and multiple limb injuries. Mr Armstrong adjourned the inquest to a date to be fixed.

The death was the second on the crossing in as many days after Mark Mills, 47, of Meredith Road, Hellesdon, near Norwich, was hit near the level crossing in Greenways just after 8am on Wednesday, September 5.

An inquest opened into his death has also been opened and adjourned.
