An east Norfolk school was evacuated today after a smell of burning came from the ICT suite.
Firefighters were called to Rollesby, near Great Yarmouth, at 9.45am after staff at Rollesby Primary and Nursery School reported a smell of burning. Staff and pupils were evacuated while the crew used thermal imaging cameras to check for a fire in the Information and Communication Technology suite, later confirming they was no blaze but a capacitor in a light fitting had failed.
Headteacher Louise Hinton said: “Obviously, we are all relieved that the incident proved to be a false alarm, but it gave us an opportunity to put our evacuation procedures to the test and I’m pleased to say it went very smoothly.
“Everyone was out and accounted for very quickly and the fire brigade was very pleased with the effective action we took to vacate the building so efficiently.
“The children were very excited to see the two fire engines arrive at their own school and see the firemen in action.”
The staff and students had been given the all clear to go back to their lessons by 11am.
