Shoppers had a real hoot when an eagle-eyed visitor was spotted in a Norwich shopping mall.

A owl, usually native in southern parts of Africa, was on show at Castle Mall today along with the Norfolk-based charity Wing and a Prayer, Wild Bird and Owl Haven.

Rik, a southern white-faced owl, was the star of the show as shoppers took a break from their Christmas shopping to get up close to the bird outside the Norwich City Football Club shop as part of an event to raise awareness of the charity’s work with wild birds and also boost its fundraising efforts.

Wing and a Prayer, Wild Bird and Owl Haven is based in Stratton Strawless, near Norwich, and aims to release as many abandoned and injured birds back to the wild as possible.

It is run by a dedicated team of volunteers, funded entirely by donations, and cares for about 600 raptors and birds each year.
