Now in its 37th year in the city, the fleamarket will be held monthly from now on and will be supporting local charities, with Break the first to benefit.

The charity’s staff had a stall selling goods from its specialist vintage shop in Banham, using the event to raise funds and awareness for its work.

The fleamarket’s owner, Helen Leith, said: “It was absolutely amazing! We had over 1,200 people through the door so I was thrilled and the place was really buzzing.

“All day long there was a steady stream of people, from eight in the morning, and that’s 1,200 without accounting for under-18s, who we do not charge entry for.”

With the nearby Crypt Cafe serving refreshments, and entry just £1, Ms Leith was hoping to re-launch the fleamarket with some fresh enthusiasm.

Around 70 stalls were offering a selection of antiques, collectables, books, coins, ceramics, dolls, furniture, jewellery, memorabilia, postcards, stamps, tools and toys.

Ms Leith continued: “I’m always looking for ways to improve because I do want quality. There were some quite expensive antiques through to middling stuff and affordable bits and pieces.

“Hopefully there was a good variety, people were definitely spending money, and there seemed to be a good atmosphere.

“Everyone kept saying how friendly the stall holders were so hopefully we can now keep that going every month.”

The fleamarket next returns to St Andrew’s Hall on Sunday, March 18. For more details, call 01603 630763 or visit www.cloistersfair.com
