Locations for pubs don’t come much better than the Water’s Edge at Woods End in Bramerton.
Sitting by the river Yare enjoying a drink and watching the world go by sounds like heaven to me.
And you can get to the pub, which is just about four miles south-east of Norwich, either by boat or road.
Owner Lee Webb, who’s originally from Ipswich, spent about 15 years working in the Cayman Islands, running his own business and working in restaurants and cafes, before taking on the pub. He spent about £300,000 doing it up.
Mr Webb and manager Charlotte Papworth are keen to make the most of the pub’s advantageous location, and the newly built decking area, where people can sit by the riverside, is already proving a big hit with locals.
You can also have your picture taken next to a life-size statue of famous runner Billy Bluelight, who is well-known for his races against steam pleasure boats in the 1920/30s along the River Wensum and River Yare.
Miss Papworth gave up her promising law career to take up her new role.
She said: “My mother lives up the road and Lee asked me to come and run the place.
“It’s such a fun job. All the locals are lovely. I used to work as reception manager at Dunston Hall, south of Norwich, and was a legal secretary at Leathes Prior in the Cathedral Close. I did enjoy it and I might return to law one day, but this is my favourite job.”
She has lived in Bramerton about six years, but cannot remember visiting the pub before Mr Webb took it on.
Customers at the new-look pub, when I visited, said they definitely like the new and improved version.
And the regulars certainly appreciate it. Liz Marchione, from Bramerton, said: “Before they took it on, it was just an ordinary pub. We feel fortunate to have a place like this on our doorstep.”
The pub is hosting a Guy Fawkes’ night on November 5.
There is free admission and customers will be able to sample some street food – hot dogs, burgers, baked potatoes, chilli and tacos – plus hot mulled wine, on the outside deck area.
Fireworks start at 7pm.
