The public will get the chance to have their say on revisions to Norwich’s proposed northern bypass next month, when a series of roadshows take place in and around the city.
The £141.5m scheme, known as the Northern Distributor Road (NDR), has been on the drawing board for a decade and £86.5m towards the cost has been secured from the government. But the 19.5km road, which would stretch from the A47 at Postwick to the A1067 Fakenham Road, has yet to get planning permission. Council officers are hoping the road can be fast-tracked through the planning process, by getting it designated as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project and are still talking to the Department for Transport about that. In the meantime, revisions to the route, made after public consultation last summer, will be presented at roadshows starting next month.
The changes, which will add an extra £5m to the cost of the road, include shifting a roundabout earmarked for Fir Covert Road in Hellesdon to Fakenham Road and swapping a proposed pedestrian, cycling and farm vehicle bridge at Low Road in Great Plumstead for an all-vehicle bridge at Middle Road, with Low Road closed.

£141.5 investment into Norfolk's economy has to be welcomed but would you make this road a priority when there is such a backlog in the highway maintenance budget and so many other needs to fulfill?

It won't cost that much. NCC has already paid £4 million for much of the aggregate. It simply has do be dug up and carted from RAF Coltishall. That's what the Gaffer says and he knows all about efficiency! Anyway MG are desperate for cash lately so its nice of their mates at NCC to help out.

This road will be such a waste of money. It won't connect to the southern bypass only at Thorpe St Andrew the other end will fizzle out on the A1067 leaving the majority of visitors wishing they had taken the southern bypass. The noise it will create for residents along the route will be a constant drone, not too pleasant in the summer months when people want to be outside in their gardens. This is yet another example of how public servants waste our money. The road to nowhere! Brilliant ! No one in their right mind will travel from Great Yarmouth to Dereham using that road - they will use the southern bypass!

Abraham, read getreal's comment and then tell us that HGV's from north Norfolk, on their way top the west will not rat run through Norwich, Hellesdon, Drayton and Ringlands to get to the A 47 and rather use the longer way round.

Whenever NCC launch one of these 'consultations' it's merely a box-ticking exercise to satisfy the planning process. NCC being NCC they will bend and manipulate the results in their favour regardless of what the public think.

I agree with Colby Army, most of my journeys are between the A47 and the A1067 which have to be made through villages or go right into the Norwich Ring Road and out again. Why spend all that money and leave out the final stage?

NCC has been dubious on the issue of the NDR, to say the least. A few years ago, NCC executives canvassed public opinion about traffic flows, but NOT directly in reference to the NDR and they didn't give much publicity to the fact either! So, if you didn't express objections to the NDR, the implication was that there were few arguments against it. For those who responded, it wouldn't have taken a genius to work out that if there were concerns about congestion, especially around residential areas and schools, then the solution would be to surely to bypass this? Strangely, around the time of this canvassing of public opinion, maps showing the implications of the NDR proposals mysteriously disappeared from the NCC website.

How come, when most comments here are critical of the decision and most likely voted NO, that the Yes vote is higher, does the EDP fiddle votes? reverse NO votes to Yes? we should be told that these uncorroborated are of no value to planners and cannot be used as 'consultation'.

Good point about unlocked doors at NCC, Electra, we should thank that young man for showing up the lax practises at NCC, not prosecute him. The NDR is a road to nowhere, designed to exacerbate traffic if all those homes are build without services schools and surgeries. The public has given their vote and said that we cannot afford it, but just with our waste strategy, we are being asked again, in a wasted costly exercise, to get the same answer, when will they learn? The idea of voting Independent in May is gathering pace as many of us had enough of party machinations.

It would seem the public are giving their opinions. This is a ridiculous waste of money. I don't know who is going to benefit financially from this but it wont be the public that the Council (tittering behind closed doors) have hysterically asked for their opinions. Just exactly when did you care one iota about the opinions of the people of Norfolk eh? Let's see what the public has to say in the only opinion poll that matters, yes that would be the elections in May. Get rid of the wastes of space and put in independent candidates who actually care about their local district and people instead of their miserable wallets.

It's not a by-pass, it's being packaged as one to disguise the fact it's a road meant to open up countryside for sprawling car-based development. Unsustainable, environmentally destructive, and incredible to think that money is still being ring-fenced for it at a time when front line social services are being shredded.

A few years ago the residents all got proposals through the post asking for their preferred route for a complete bypass. 3 western and three eastern options were put forward. They ignored the public then and did what they wanted, it won't be any different this time either.
