A Norwich man has been boosted in his efforts to raise funds for charity - after a landlord pledged to donate 10pc of the takings at a special quiz and games night to the appeal.

David Powles is attempting to raise £2,000 for the Ormiston and Families Trust by taking part in the Virgin London Marathon on April 13, 2014.

In order to help him reach that target the 34-year-old is organising a charity quiz and games night at the Pig and Whistle pub, in All Saints Green, Norwich.

The night, on Friday, February 28, will see teams of between four and six do battle over a series of quiz rounds - as well as one or two special sporting challenges.

There will also be a prize draw and the pub has agreed that 10pc of the takings from the night will go to the appeal.

Mr Powles, who works for the EDP and Evening News as editor (digital), is also looking for people or companies willing to donate prizes for the draw on the night.

He said: “I’m really grateful to the pub for not only letting me hire it out for free, but also agreeing to help me reach my fund-raising target.

“I’ve hosted one or two quizzes before and always like to have a bit of a laugh, as well as serious competition of course.

“Rounds will range from the classics like general knowledge and sport to a picture round, a who am I? round and my personal favourite, a name that Bhuna? round.”

It is the first time Mr Powles has attempted to run the London Marathon and his training is well underway.

He chose the trust, which supports isolated and vulnerable children, young people and adults in Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex, after putting out an appeal on twitter.

He added: “They perfectly fit the bill for what I was after. They do very important work, helping local people in real need of support.

“It’s a great motivation on those cold and dark mornings to know that you are helping such a great cause.”

For tickets for the quiz evening, which begins at 7pm, with the quiz starting at 8pm, or if you can donate a prize, email or tweet him @david_powles
