Residents have welcomed a decision to give permission for a much-loved pub to be refurbished and reopened.

The grade two-listed Marlpit Arms on Hellesdon Road in the Wensum city boundary will have a bar, restaurant, five guest bedrooms and a car park, as well as a new barn-style building containing five separate dwellings.

Lucy Galvin, chairman of The Marlpit Community Centre and founder member of the Friends of The Marlpit, spoke at Norwich City Council’s planning meeting yesterday in support of the application.

She said: “When The Marlpit closed in May 2014 after over 60 years’ service to the community, a sense of shock went through the area. One elderly gentleman was in tears when he told me ‘I feel completely abandoned’. This is a strong community and it wants its pub back.”

City councillor Simeon Jackson said: “It’s so rare that we get the opportunity to see a new pub, and it’s really great that we have that today.”
