There has been a mixed reaction to our story which revealed speed limits of 20mph could be introduced on more than 300 further roads in Norwich.

Consultation has started into reducing the limits on dozens more roads in the south of the city, with the public asked if they support 20mph limits in parts of Lakenham, Tuckswood and Eaton.

And people out and about in Norwich on Wednesday thought it was a good idea.

Dennis Bird, 70, from Wacton, said: 'It's a good idea provided that people actually stick to the limit. The biggest problem will be enforcing it though because there aren't enough police to monitor every place. So it probably won't work in reality, but the theory is good.'

Nick Jackson, 55, from Dereham, said: 'In other places they've been very effective, so they should work.'

And Kate Miles-Bagshaw, 38, from Horsham St Faith, added: 'If people stick to the speed limit, then they should be effective. It'll only be a good idea if they are policed and they're in appropriate areas.'

Council bosses have already brought in 20mph limits in the city centre, Earlham and part of the north of the city, but say slowing down more traffic will make streets safer and more pleasant for cyclists and pedestrians.

But there was a mixed reaction on our Facebook page to the proposals:

• Sarah Ives: 'It's so pointless. No one sticks to them anyway, if anything with how powerful cars are now and how good their brakes are speed limits should be increased.'

• Emma Fitzgerald: 'Totally agree with this, as my road is on here and people drive down there at 70mph it's crazy.'

• Paul Wilson: 'Ridiculous, never herd of any accidents happening or even nearly happening in and around Eaton. Green Ways and Church Lane are two of the safest roads in Norwich. Who would enforce the speed limit if it was introduced?'

• Hannah Brown: 'This is pointless! I live on Patteson Road and it's been changed to a 20 - and we have seen no change! It's still used as a rat run also!'

• Anna-Marie Hall: 'Well I hope they do my street. I'm sick of cars speeding past. With all the children about its a disaster waiting to happen.'

• Helen Betts: 'So they want to slow down traffic. This is all well and good but what about slowing down some of the cyclists. They don't adhere to the high way code. Run red lights, use the roads as a speed way track and constantly weave in and out of traffic, never indicate, wear headphones so the can't hear vehicles approaching and text while they are riding their bikes. Perhaps the council should invest in teaching people how to ride their bikes in a safe manner.'

• William Fisher: 'The damage to your child inflicted by a car doing 20mph is significantly less than that at 30mph. Seems a good enough reason to me.'

• Stephen John Haggar: What's the point? It's 20mph where I live but no one takes any notice.'

• Hannah Kate English: 'My road is 20mph but that hasn't stopped idiots using it like a race track. It's not policed at all.'

The consultation over the latest proposals can be found here, with people invited to comment by August 29. Consultation over 20mph limits for dozens more roads in the north of the city, in areas such as Catton Grove and Fiddlewood, closed last month.

The final decision over the limits will be taken by members of the Norwich highways agency committee in the autumn.
