Prime minister David Cameron has said Lowestoft will benefit economically from the A12 leading from the town to Great Yarmouth being renamed and upgraded to the A47.

Mr Cameron made his comments after he attended a meeting this afternoon at Lowestoft’s OrbisEnergy centre with local business people, which was hosted by Waveney MP Peter Aldous.

The prime minister said: “Peter has been a really strong advocate of what needs to happen. There have been two very consistent messages - transport and energy.

“Transport because linking Lowestoft with the A47 study, so that we look at the Lowestoft/Great Yarmouth road, that is absolutely key, together with the massive investment in transport in the region .

“The second message is energy.

“The potential here to be a hub of renewable energy technology and expertise is there, the expertise is clearly there, so the Enterprise Zone, the energy bill, strike prices, the encouragement of overseas investment, backing SME in this sector, that’s what Peter has been telling me. I listened very carefully to that.

“I wanted to come and hear the story myself today.”

“The point what local businesses, the chamber of commerce and others were making to me was very important. It was that the growth and development in East Anglia does not stop at Great Yarmouth and comes all the way to Lowestoft and you get the benefit of being fully connected up with these transport corridors, that’s the message, and that is what we have got to deliver.”
