This is the house that closed a road.

Nestled in the centre of one of Norwich's oldest and most picturesque areas, 21 Elm Hill sits on its road's junction with Waggon and Horses Lane.

And it is being in this location that has led to the house - which is a Grade II listed building - closing part of a city road, at least on an experimental basis.

With the house sitting on the very corner of the narrow lane, 'high sided vehicles' clipping the corner of it has become a frequent problem.

Vehicles, particularly supermarket home delivery vans, are reported to have struck it most often, as they look to negotiate Waggon and Horses Lane.

A report that went before the Norwich highways agency committee this week said a number of attempts to curtail this problem had already been made.

It said: 'There have already been several attempts to resolve this problem in recent years, by the installation of 'unsuitable for heavy goods vehicles' signs on the approach and by repositioning wooden bollards outside 21 Elm Hill to align vehicles with the approach to the lane.

'As there appears to be a particular issue with supermarket home delivery vehicles, various supermarkets have been contacted to advise them of the issue, but not all replied.'

However, with the problem persisting, committee members agreed to the latest suggested measures to eradicate the issue - an experimental traffic order closing sections of the road.

This means over the next six months, three separate points of closure for Waggon and Horses Lane will be tested, before a final decision can be made over the road.

These different points are:

• Next to the house itself, at the junction of Elm Hill and Waggon and Horses Lane

• At the Del Ballroom

• At Samson Court

Other options considered by officers included making the road one way, so vehicles cannot approach the house from two directions, introducing vehicle height restrictions or extra advisory signs.

However, committee members agreed with the officer's recommendation to experiment with closing the road.
