A Norfolk man who lost his leg has been reassessed by a doctor as the campaign continues to restore his disability benefits which were cut by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

A doctor visited Bobby Kilkenny, from Diss, on February 6 after the DWP decided up-to-date information was needed about his condition and mobility because previous records had come from his doctor, who he does not see on a regular basis, visiting instead a specialist in Norwich.

However, Mr Kilkenny's partner Toni Mba said she could not understand why the DWP had decided to cut his Disability Living Allowance (DLA) high rate mobility and low rate care allowance at the end of January when it knew the information on which the decision was made was insufficient.

He was hoping to use the benefit to buy a car to get him to work and also for treatment at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital because he currently relies on Miss Mba for car journeys, while a work colleague who lives nearby also provides him with lifts into work.

But the DWP cut the benefit after deeming his mobility had improved, prompting Miss Mba to write to the DWP appealing against the decision and also to start a petition on social networking site Facebook calling for the benefit to be saved, which has so far attracted over 1,000 names.

'The doctor said she could not understand why the benefit had been cut because he needs help so we are a bit more positive than we were,' Miss Mba said.

A Thetford-based driving assessor was also arranged by Miss Mba to assess whether Mr Kilkenny needed a car, deeming that he did.

Mr Kilkenny initially broke his right leg while playing football in a sunday league match for Wortham in 2008, but suffered repeated infections and the decision was made to amputate the leg.

Since then, he has endured months of rehabilitation after being fitted with a prosthetic limb, while his partner helps him around the home.
