A £504m wishlist of projects along the A47 and A12 which are likely to be put to the chancellor have been unveiled at a meeting in Norfolk.
Department for Transport officials look poised to ask the Treasury for funds to dual three sections of the A47, which stretches from Great Yarmouth into the Midlands.
This includes the section from Blofield to Burlingham, the stretch from North Tuddenham to Easton and the link to the west of Peterborough between Sutton and the A1.
The DfT also looks set to request funds for:
Improvements to the Guyhirn roundabout;
Improvements to the A11/A47 Thickthorn Interchange;
Vauxhall roundabout Great Yarmouth;
Station Square/Waveney Road.
While the DfT said that no firm decisions had been made, hopes had been raised in Norfolk that there would be good news in the Autumn Statement later this year.
But North East Cambridgeshire MP Steve Barclay has voiced concerns that the Wisbech to Guyhirn and Thorney section of the A47 could miss out on being included in a further strategy document due next March.
He has voiced concerns about the way the priorities have been identified.
The Highways Agency staff believe that, on the basis of the work to date, there is likely to be a strong business case for the chosen areas and that an improvement scheme would address the problems.
Work also needs to start before 2021.
Toby Coke, chairman of Norfolk County Council’s Environment, Development and Transport Committee said: “Although ultimately we would like to see the full length of the A47 dualled, we recognise that this can’t be done immediately.
“If these schemes are announced in the Autumn Statement it would be a good start towards full dualling and make a real difference to the people and economy of Norfolk.”
A DFT spokesman said: “We are discussing a range of potential options for improving the A47 with interested parties to understand their views.
No investment decisions have been made as this is work in progress and, when completed the study outcomes will inform the government’s 2014 Autumn Statement.”
