Drivers in Norwich have been warned they are likely to face disruption when work starts later this month to make major changes to
one of the city centre’s busiest roundabouts.

Norfolk County Council bosses say the changes they are planning to make to a road leading up to the Grapes Hill roundabout will ease congestion.

The work, due to start on Monday, January 13, will be carried out on Convent Road, one of the roads which connects with the roundabout. It will cost just under £100,000.

The changes will see an extra lane created for traffic approaching the Grapes Hill roundabout from the Unthank Road/Earlham Road direction.

The extra lane will be created by reducing the Convent Road exit from the roundabout to a single lane and making some changes to the central island on Convent Road.

The work, which is expected to take up to five weeks to complete, will affect the inbound and outbound carriageways of Convent Road, with lane closures and reduction in lane widths on this road and also on Grapes Hill roundabout.

However, to minimise disruption during the busiest periods, there will be no work affecting the Norwich inbound traffic before 9.30am and no work affecting outbound traffic after 4.30pm. The council says access to properties and businesses will be maintained as far as is “reasonably practicable” while the work is carried out. The county council has apologised for any inconvenience which the work might cause.

The work will be carried out by Norfolk County Council’s environment, transport and development department and their contractors. It is a Transport for Norwich scheme drawn from the Norwich Area Transportation Strategy Implementation Plan, which is a package of road improvements.
