The joint Norfolk and Suffolk Major Investigation Team launched a probe into the death of James May, 76, from Great Yarmouth, who died at the hospital on September 20, 2013.

It came after the hospital referred to the police an internal allegation that Mr May died as a result of a deliberate drugs overdose.

A middle aged man, a member of medical staff at the hospital, was arrested in connection with the death but after a review of the evidence, including the results of toxicology tests, no further action was taken against him.

A police spokesman said further enquiries carried out by the investigation team, in conjunction with the Health and Safety Executive and Care Quality Commission, have revealed no cause for any criminal proceedings, and the case has now concluded.

A file will be prepared for the coroner and an inquest will be held in due course.
