Members of Pole Fusion pole dancing club, which meets at Oasis Sports and Leisure Club in Pound Lane, joined performers across the globe to set a new record for the most people pole dancing at the same time.

And they smashed the old record, set at 206 people in 2006, with more than 800 people worldwide taking part on February 22.

The club has eight poles, and dancers were videoed performing six minute routines by Guinness adjudicators.

They joined dancers from more than 150 clubs worldwide, from America to Australia, Africa to Dubai.

And the Thorpe St Andrew dancers took the opportunity to raise more than £1,200 for Cancer Research UK.

Kathy Buller, owner and senior instructor at Pole Fusion, said: “We were excited and hope we will be recognised as a sport over the next few years.

“The health benefits are awesome.

“There’s lots of muscular endurance and flexibility - the type of thing you get with hardcore exercise.”

She said pole dancing also increases self-esteem and confidence, and members of the club have brought home silverware from competitions in recent years.

Pole Fusion was founded more than 10 years ago and has more than 1,500 members - men and women.

Ms Buller said she was one of the first 16 people in the world to qualify as an international pole sports judge and judged the 2013 International Pole Sports Federations World Pole Championships in London.

She added she hopes pole dancing will be recognised by the Olympic Commitee so it can be apart of the Olympics.

The UK now has its own UK Pole Sports Committee of which Ms Buller is vice president.
