The carnival in Wymondham used to be a firm fixture on the town’s social calendar, but for a number of years the traditional colourful parade has been missing from the streets.
But that is set to change this summer when the carnival returns with a parade and festivities in the Market Place on July 26.
The Wymondham Business Group (WBG) is organising this year’s extravaganza, which will be based on a seaside theme, with the town becoming Wymondham-On-Sea for the day.
Tony Holden, a carnival committee member, said a stage would be set up in the Market Place, upon which the finalists from the Wymondham’s Got Talent competition would be performing.
He said the Market Cross would act as the centrepiece for the event, with the rest of Market Street acting as the “pier” and hosting stalls from organisations and businesses within the town.
There will not be any vehicles involved in the parade, which will be a walking procession starting from Kings Head Meadow before winding its way along Back Lane and then back through the town before finishing at Market Cross.
Following the performance by the Wymondham’s Got Talent finalists, there are plans to try and put on a firework display over the event to wrap up the day’s festivities, which are set to start at noon, with the procession at 2pm and the whole show finishing around 9pm.
Mr Holden said the WBG hoped the carnival would be self-financing and appealed for people to come forward if they would like to get involved.
He added: “We already have some stalls, donkey rides for the children and a Carnival Queen competition is also in the mix, with Dianne Fernee the mayor organising this aspect of the show.
“We would particularly like to hear from any local companies who would like to either have a stall or take part in the procession. We want to get as many people as possible involved.”
