Pit bike ridden anti-socially crushed at Norfolk yard

A pit bike that had been ridden anti-socially around an estate in Thetford was crushed yesterday at a family operated scrapyard in a Norfolk village.

The bike, which was demolished at Mellors Metals in Great Ellingham, was seized on January 14, in Ely Way, on the Abbey Estate, under Section 59 of the 2002 Police Reform Act.

Residents had reported it being ridden around the public green, causing noise by constantly revving, and creating a safety issue for legitimate users of the green, such as children playing.

The rider was given a formal warning, but he was then caught using the bike again, resulting in the bike being seized and the start of the process to have the vehicle destroyed.

PC Keith Kenny, of the Thetford safer neighbourhood team (SNT), said: “We have received complaints from residents on the Abbey Estate about this type of anti-social behaviour, which affects the quality of life of the residents there, as well as also being potentially dangerous. I hope that our actions in seizing and crushing this bike sends out a strong message to those individuals who would persist with this sort of behaviour, that it will not be tolerated.

“We would encourage residents who are experiencing problems of this nature to contact Thetford SNT.”
