Police have just released CCTV images of bearded dark-haired man wearing a green jacket and trousers they want to question about the crime.

Vicar Canon Derek Earis said there was about £100 in the safes, which were collecting donations including money given by people lighting memorial candles.

It is believed the thief fished money out through the wall safe slots.

“We want him caught. It is disappointing, because it is difficult times for churches. The money is given to help the church and obviously we need it and use it wisely,” he added.

Churches were a soft target because they were open and had suffered a few thefts in recent years.

The incident dates back to Sunday June 19 and happened between 4.30pm and 5.30pm.

Officers are keen to identify the man pictured. Anyone with information should contact PC Tony Perretta, North Walsham Safer Neighbourhood Team, on 0845 456 4567 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
