A bouncy castle, climbing wall and balance bike racing were among the highlights of a family-focused celebration that saw hundreds of people pass through Swaffham Market Place this afternoon.

Families from across the town braved overcast skies and a chilly wind as they munched through DIY picnics on long tables outside the Assembly Rooms, while children zoomed up and down on the pedal-free bikes.

Kizzy Dady, 32, whipped up the afternoon’s most patriotic cake, a Union Jack-themed vanilla sponge decorated with blueberries and strawberries.

Dressed in white shoes and shirt, blue jeans and red braces, she brought her family, neighbours and even Auntie Maureen from Southampton with her to the party.

Janet Kellingray, 54, said: “There’s a real family atmosphere. I really like seeing the children enjoying themselves here. I think it’s good they have catered for young children and the older children with the attractions.”

Bunting-clad town centre pubs offered barbecues, beer and nostalgic songs.

The jubilee celebrations dove-tailed with the town’s 10-day walking and cycling festival, with children encouraged to use pedal power to operate a food blender to create their own healthy fruit smoothies.

Other jubilee events included a special flower show at St Peter and St Paul’s Church.
