Great Yarmouth’s central beach was transformed into a sporting arena when stars of the volleyball world descended on the resort for some high energy action.
Players from across the UK swooped on the resort for the second leg of the Volleyball England beach tour, which took over Yarmouth’s golden sands this weekend.
The free-to-watch event brought crowds to the seafront who cheered as they watched the super-toned teams of men, women and juniors take to the court to spike, serve and bump their way through the competition to be in with a chance of landing a place in the finals in August.
Yarmouth has hosted the beach competition for the last eight years and Mark Kontopoulos, event director, said it was a great setting for the contest.
“We have great support from the council and it’s a pleasant place that we like coming back to,” he added.
“It’s been a decent crowd, we would have liked a few more people to be around but with the weather it’s a bit unpredictable. But the people that have been here have been very supportive.”
Alongside the UK players the tournament attracted a handful of stars from Europe, who made the journey to Norfolk especially to take part.
The tournament also aimed to attract more people into the sport. Great Yarmouth Borough Council set up nets on the beach before the tour arrived offering residents the chance to try their hand at the sport for free.
And Mr Kontopoulos said budding players were always welcome to have a go during the competition.
He added: “It’s an opportunity to show people what the sport is about and we always encourage people to come and have a go, and we can then direct them to a local club.”
