Pens were put to one side in a Norfolk classroom this week as pupils were encouraged to practise their communication skills.

Children at Thurton Primary, near Loddon, downed their pens and pencils as they took part in No Pens Wednesday.

The day, which was organised by the Communication Trust, included activities such as obstacle courses and treasure hunts as the pupils were challenged to develop their speaking and listening skills through debating, maths games and storytelling.

Gordon Royall, from year four, said: “It was epic because we didn’t have to write anything and we could talk a lot, something I’m good at.”

Luke Spencer, also in year four, said it encouraged him to speak to pupils he hadn’t spoken to before, while Charlotte Rix, of year five, said it was “quite challenging, but very enjoyable”.

Headteacher Cassandra Williams said it was an amazing day for the whole school.

“There was a buzz around the school with children reminding staff and each other about no pens. It was amazing to see how the children got around ordering their lunches by putting stickers on lists and typing emails,” she said.

All of the school was involved in the Communication Trust event, with a focus on encouraging the children to contribute more to class activities. It is hoped the children will use what they learned to benefit their future education.
