A Midsummer Night’s Dream was on the timetable at one Norfolk school as pupils took part in a workshop led by members of the all-male Shakespeare company Propeller.
The actors have been performing A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Comedy of Errors at Norwich Theatre Royal this week, and took some time out from their busy schedule to work with pupils at Hellesdon High School.
The pupils spent some time working on characterisation and learning performance techniques from the Propeller actors, and the workshop also included a question and answer session.
Prior to the workshop the group had also visited the Theatre Royal to watch a performance by Propeller, and the pupils said it had all been a great learning experience.
“I have found it really inspirational and learned a lot which will help with studying drama,” said 15-year-old pupil Ben Tungate.
“It was interesting to learn how to control your nerves on stage and how to learn your lines.
“Propeller were great to see on stage. A Midsummer Night’s Dream was really funny and some of the elements we learned in class about the play had been interpreted in their production.
“It is great to learn from actors themselves as they are the people you’ve seen using the techniques on stage.”
Jack Chapman, 16, said: “I have learned various skills like using body language to help get into character.
“There is that sense of experience from the actors so it has been great to learn from them.”
Dylan Thornes-Mortimer, 16, said: “I loved it. It has taught me loads about acting and how you portray a character.”
As previously reported, the Theatre Royal has formed an educational trust with Hellesdon High School and also Arden Grove Infant and Nursery School. The trust, along with the theatre’s existing education programme, is a step towards the theatre’s long-term plan to create a centre for the county that promotes arts education, training and skills.
