It’s an event that always brings out the best in our area, and this year’s Ride for Life at Santon Downham was no different.

On a day more suited to brollies than bikes, hundreds of cyclists and walkers donned their waterproofs and did their best to make sure the event, for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), hit its £35,000 target.

Kicking off at 8am this morning, participants could take on routes around Thetford Forest including a three or nine mile walk, a 10 or 25 mile off-road cycle ride or a 19 or 35 mile road cycle ride.

And with the car park packed by 9am, Laura Shearing, Norfolk Fund-raiser for EACH, said the event had exceeded expectations.

“We’ve had 612 people sign up and at least 40 come along today so it’s been fantastic.

“This is a very important date in the diary and our flagship event, and it’s been very well supported down the years.

“The fact that it’s been going for 21 years is testament to how much people are behind it,” she said.

The family feel of the event was in evidence throughout the day, with groups including tots, teenagers and the elderly taking part.

Sarah Groves, from Aslacton, was taking part with her family and friends.

“We come here for the children more than anything, and because it’s a fantastic charity.

“It’s our third year and we’ve brought our children and their friends along. We do the 25 mile course and the youngest with us started doing that when he was six.”

More than 45 troops from RAF Honington were on hand to man the routes round the course, while a legion of volunteers helped with everything from registering participants to serving up tea and coffee.

Marquees run by the local Rotary Club were also on hand ready to kickstart their mini-beer festival for the remainder of the day.
