Communities around Norwich have been enjoying the warm weather together at events around the city organised as part of The Big Lunch campaign.

Communities around Norwich have been enjoying the warm weather together at events around the city organised as part of The Big Lunch campaign.

The campaign is an idea from social and environmental charity the Eden Project and funded by the Big Lottery, encouraging people to hold a street party or a gathering in a back garden, park or community hall.

Eaton Park has hosting a free community event as part of the Big Lunch, with local staff from Halifax banks, which is one of the campaign sponsors, organising rounders, five-a-side football, egg and spoon and wheelbarrow races.

A Big Lunch street party has also been held by people living in Wellington Road, off Earlham Road.

Grapes Hill Community Garden has also hosted a bring and share Big Lunch, with free entertainment and The Reindeer pub selling tapas, wine and real ales in the garden.

The garden committee’s secretary, Fran Ellington, said: “It was amazing to see so many people enjoying themselves at our Big Lunch and, most importantly, enjoying the company of people they might never have talked to before.

“I would encourage everyone to get involved next year - we’ve had such a great time, not only today, but also planning the event.

“It’s fantastic to think that so many people across the UK are sitting down together at Big Lunches today. We will certainly remember our Big Lunch here for years to come.”

People living in Normandie Tower, off Rouen Road, were also be getting to know their neighbours better through a Big Lunch picnic on the grass behind the flats.

Organiser Helen Simpson said: “It’s been good to get to know the people from the flats that we haven’t had a chance to properly meet before. We usually just said hello but now we’re sharing food, beer and conversation!”

A free Big Lunch event was also held at Dragon Hall, in King Street, where people were encouraged to bring a picnic.

Dragon Hall director, Angela Graham, said “Dragon Hall was pleased to take part in The Big Lunch this year. It was lovely to see local residents having lunch in our Medieval garden accompanied by local musicians.”

Free packs to organise Big Lunch events will be available until the end of June, including undated materials such as posters, invitations, a planner and other resources, from www.thebiglunch.com
