Cycling brought in a huge medal haul of 14 at the last Olympics in Beijing, with eight gold, four silver and two bronze medals.

Norwich bicycle shop Pedal Revolution went along to St Thomas More, on Jessop Road, to inspire the school’s pupils ahead of what is hoped to be another cycling success in London this summer.

Many of the pupils had their bikes serviced and repaired free of charge by staff from Pedal Revolution before over 30 year five and six pupils were taught some of the techniques and tricks of bike racing on the school field.

They then took part in competitive races in teams and eight riders were chosen to participate in an inter-schools competition later in the term.

St Thomas More deputy headteacher, Steve Fordington, said: “In Olympic year 2012 it is particularly exciting to have such a sport in our junior and primary schools and we are very grateful to Pedal Revolution for their enthusiasm and commitment.

“The event was heavily oversubscribed, such was the interest, and Pedal Revolution plan to return for future sessions.”

The event launched the Pedal Revolution Academy, an initiative in conjunction with social enterprise ActivatingCIC aimed at introducing cycle sport to 32 Norfolk schools this year.

The Pedal Revolution Academy aims to introduce cycle sport to school PE curriculums through its scheme - which is free to schools and pupils.

Pedal Revolution managing director, Gareth Edwards, explained: “We wanted to offer a taste of cycle coaching, training and racing to our local schools so we could share our passion for bikes, sport and competition.

“If youngsters do not get the opportunity to try cycling they could live their whole life without realising their potential in our sport.

“We would love to find the next Mark Cavendish or Sir Chris Hoy but it’s not about that - it’s all about offering an introduction to the sport and developing grass roots cycle sport through establishing an infrastructure to let schools experience the thrill and excitement of cycle sport.”
