Suffolk Police have warned motorists to take care on the county’s roads ahead of the strong winds and heavy rain which is expected to reach the county this afternoon.
Wind speeds are set to increase and heavy rain is expected from early afternoon through to early evening.
Motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journeys, reduce their speed, leave greater distances between themselves and the vehicle in front and consider the likelihood that there will be standing water and floods on the roads.
The Highways Agency is advising road users that the Orwell Bridge, which carries the A14 over the river Orwell near Ipswich, is due to be closed from 2pm today due to high winds.
It will remain closed until the high winds subside, which is expected to be around 5pm tonight but may be later.
During the Orwell Bridge closure there is a planned diversion route, via the A1156, A1189 and A1214 through Ipswich.
The Highways Agency will continue to monitor wind speeds closely and will reopen the bridges as soon as it is safe to do so.
