Reader D J Hastings believes the time is fast approaching when we have to remind all our politicians who elected them.

Two items caught my eye in the EDP on February 10.
The first was the report on the residents’ concern at the digging up of the runway at RAF Coltishall, which highlighted yet again the refusal of some of our politicians to listen to the views of the local people.
At the very beginning many of us were concerned to hear Norfolk county councillor Cliff Jordan – then a cabinet member – state that “we are going to dig up the runway”. And now it appears his threat might come partly true, with plans to dig up the ends of the runway. His excuse is that “The assets have to be put to use”.

But in these times of austerity, when important services are being cut, there was no need to waste over £4m of taxpayers’ money to buy the site in the first place, especially when they had no business plan, and the private sector had already submitted a fully costed and (in my view) viable scheme to buy the site and ensure that this historic Battle of Britain airfield was preserved.

Then there was the report that two Conservative councillors had walked out of the meeting of the steering party group set up to try to restore the democratic committee system instead of the cabinet dictatorship, saying it was “undemocratic”. How they can ever say a steering group made up of two Labour, two Conservative, two Greens, two Liberal Democrats, two UKIP and one Independent is undemocratic is beyond belief.

Yes they lost a vote that is democracy, but to walk out is like young children who throw their toys out of the pram because they did not get their own way.
I think the time is fast approaching when we have to bring all our politicians up with a jolt and remind them that we... did not elect them to act as little dictators looking after their own little pet schemes.

  • Never a truer word was spoken. Time for the electorate to speak up if there is too much focus on these councillors "pet projects".

  • I fail to see the point of this piece unless it is just to whinge about councillors (again). The so-called democracy we live in allows us to vote councillors out of office if we dont like what they are doing.
