Planning permission was granted for the temporary venue behind the ice rink on Lea Bridge Road at Waltham Forest Council on Tuesday February 7.

More than 1,250 people signed a petition against the proposals and a demonstration was held outside the meeting.

Hackney councillor Ian Rathbone said: “For us in this area it is the thin end of a wedge into building all over green space and putting up high rise blocks on both sides of Lea Bridge Road and the banks of the Lea.”

Supporters of the Olympic Delivery Authorities’ plans said the Games created special circumstances and the green space would returned to its original condition.

An ODA spokesman said it would work to keep any impact on the Marsh to “an absolute minimum” and “restore the land to public use as soon as possible after the Paralympic Games”.

  • So much is reported in the national press about the wonderful benefits of the Olympics and how it is regenerating an area and how wonderful it is for all the poor deprived souls living there.. What nonsense that is, as a resident of E9 all I have had is disruption and noise and access to the boroughs green spaces restricted whenever deemed necessary. To now build on another piece of open land, albeit temporarily, shows once again that the well being of the residents are being overlooked. Still as long as we all keep out of the way and dont dare use the public transport for two months, or try to drive into our homes during the daytime, oh and be sure to spend all our money at Westfields, then all will be rosy. Roll on September when this farce is done with and we can return to normal life!

  • The ODA is a law unto themselves and don't give fig about any others concerns. They might as well have held the games in Communist China again after seeing the bill to host the games could pass 20 billion mark.
