Olympic Torch Relay: Norwich road closure details

Road users are being warned of traffic delays when the Olympic Torch arrives in the city this (Wednesday) afternoon.
The historic flame is due to arrive in Norwich at the Boundary, Aylsham Road, at about 5.55pm and will make its ways towards the city centre to arrive at Chapelfield Gardens at about 6.45pm where the cauldron will be lit.
Some 35,000 people are expected to turn out in Norwich to watch the relay and take part in activities in the city centre.
People are being advised to either attend the celebration site, Chapelfield Gardens, or pick a spot on the route to watch the torch go by - they will not be able to do both.
Some roads in Norwich will be in place from 4pm and there will be a rolling road closure from Aylsham Road to Duke Street from 5.40pm to 6.25pm. These roads will be opened as soon as it is safe to do so.
There will be a road closure in place from Duke Street to Exchange Street from 6pm to 7pm.
St Peters Street and Gentleman’s Walk will be closed from 4pm until at least 11pm and Theatre Street will be closed from 4pm to 8.30pm.
Meanwhile, Chantry car park will be closed from 4pm to 8.30pm and there will be restricted access to and from the Forum car park between 4pm to 8.30pm.
Extra park and ride services will be provided for the event. Thickthorn, Harford, Airport and Sprowston will be open until 8.30pm and extra park and ride services will run until 11pm to Thickthorn.
Helen Selleck, cultural and events manager for Norwich City Council, said: “The message is for people to please be aware there will be road closures and to expect delays from 5.30pm. Road closures will start from 4pm in the city centre.”
On Thursday, the torch will be lit on the battlements of Norwich Castle at 6.45am before it is run to Norwich Cathedral, rowed across the river and leaves the city via Kett’s Hill.
There will be rolling road closures in place and motorists are being advised that there will be disruption to St Williams Way, Kett’s Hill and Riverside Road between 7am and 7.45am.

I shall have my moment of pleasure later in the year. For now I am not interested in 'the flame'. How many of the 35 000 know what the bearers have acheived? Children get to wear the strip of their favorite football team and carry the symbolic ball onto the pitch at other times of the year, all the same to me. For now I hope those who want to take part enjoy themselves and those who do not are not inconvenienced.

Hilarious comments but I agree with Paul Kersey. I am bored rigid with this and my eyelids fall as soon as someone starts banging on about it. Especially the silly woman whose son was taking part in some other area who described him as "An Olympian". No he is not an Olympian he is some little lad who is allowed to carry a metal ice cream cone with some inflammable stuff in it. Olympians are peope who run faster, jump higher and train harder than the rest of the world. And none of you are they. So get over yourselves. And keep away from the schools at 4pm. I have to pick up my child and I am going to be seriously annoyed if I cannot do so because of a bunch of deluded ice cream carriers trotting along surrounded by vast quantities of police and hangers on. In fact the hissy fit I will throw is very likely to be gold medal standard!

Enormous amount of disruption for working people - chaos on the roads , for what? Some bloke running around with a stick in his hand - it beggars belief. All to be repeated on Saturday when we must endure the annual lorry crawl stopping all other legitimate traffic.

Looks like I may get stcuk in the city as I am providing music for a Tea Dance in The Assembly Rooms from 3pm until 5pm hoping to leave at 5.30pm. Now I wonder if there will be a road I can leave by. Theatre Street will be closed and it only leaves Chapel Field North which hopefully will be open.

There is a typo in the article. Airport, Sprowston, Postwick and Costessey Park and Rides are open until 20:30, Thickthorn is open until 23:00.
