Around 20 nurses staged a protest outside the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital today calling on the government to improve their pay conditions.

Members of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) in Norfolk were part of a national day of action to highlight the coalition government’s decision to ignore the Pay Review Body’s recommendation on nurses’ pay.

The government approved a 1pc increase for NHS staff from April. However, an estimated 600,000 health workers only received their normal incremental pay rise.

The new campaign highlights that most nurses will not be seeing a cost of living increase this year and those that do will be receiving less than £5 a week.

Karen Webb, RCN Eastern regional director said: “Nurses have cared for record numbers of patients through the most disruptive reorganisation in the history of the NHS and in the face of huge workforce cuts.”

“Nurses deserve to be valued and appreciated and this paltry increase, which most of them won’t even see, sends a very different message.”

  • I'd like to say a big thank you to all the members of the public who showed their support for NHS workers at the protest outside the mental health trust building at 80 St Stephen's Road 12 - 1pm today. It really is appreciated.
