A Norwich youth arts venue is celebrating receiving an £180,000 boost that will help with its ambitions to inspire and nurture the next generation of young performers in the city and county.
The Garage, in Chapel Field North, is set to receive the funding over three years from Arts Council England via its Lottery-funded Grants for the Arts programme.
Darren Grice, director of The Garage, said the money was a tremendous boost for the venue and would be used in three main areas, all aimed at encouraging young people to develop their talents in the arts.
He said: “It will enable us to invest in our Curtain Up! programme which we have been developing over the last year or so, bringing in professional theatre and professional artists to help inspire young people. It will also help us support young artists and make new work.”
He added: “There will be more theatre companies presenting professional theatre, more theatre companies and artists making theatre with young people, and more young people benefitting from working with inspirational artists and developing their talents and skills.”
He said The Garage was developing an emerging artists programme for talented young people, which would include mentoring and opportunities to work with professional artists.
“It’s about incubating a new generation of talented artists from Norwich and Norfolk,” Mr Grice said, adding that the hope was that more work created at The Garage would go on national tours in the future.
“Our ambition is that The Garage becomes an engine room for a new generation of artists to create new work and take it on to the national stage.
“We see The Garage as a home for emerging talent.”
He said The Garage’s vision for the future involved consolidating and building on everything achieved at The Garage since it opened in 2004, and that the new funding would help The Garage with fulfilling its potential in the way it helps young people, and in playing an important role in the local cultural sector.
