There is lots of puppet fun in store for audiences this summer in Norwich Puppet Theatre’s latest programme.`
Joy Haynes, theatre director, said: “It’s going to be a fantastic combination of our traditional shows inside and also we have got our Picnic at the Puppet Theatre outdoor event on May 31 where we have got two outdoor puppet shows and puppet making too.
“Our summer season also features our recent brand new production, The Frog and The Princess, which will be here for two weeks in August. There’s lots for families to enjoy!”
The May half-term includes productions of Three Colours, Jack and the Beanstalk, the Pied Piper and The Musicians of Bremen, with the Picnic at the Puppet Theatre “mini-festival” event at the end of the week.
On June 14, Pickled Image in association with North Wall, will be presenting The Shop of Little Horrors.
“We’ve had Pickled Image here before, and they’ve been very popular,” said Joy.
“This show is for ages 12 and over. It’s not Little Shop of Horrors with all the plants, it’s a kind of macabre story about an old curiosity shop and a collection of puppets.”
Throughout the summer holidays, audiences can enjoy watching The Frog and the Princess (August 4-9 and 12-15), the Pied Piper (July 26 and 31 and August 1 and 2), Egg Bird and Other String Puppet Stories (August 16).
Joy said alongside the theatre’s performance programme there would be a variety of workshops.
“The other highlight is our International Summer School for puppet and theatre makers,” she said. “This is a pilot and we hope to make it a regular event and attract participants from all over the country and beyond as well.”
The International Summer School Courses are set to be led by puppetry luminaries Stephen Mottram and Rene Baker and dancer Jasmiina Sipilä.
Meanwhile, there are puppet-making workshops and educational activities for youngsters to take part in.
