Publicans across Norwich are urging people to watch the European Championship matches at big screens in their premises, in a bid to capitalise on the boost in trade already given by the Queen’s diamond jubilee and the City of Ale event.

The City of Ale event, a 10-day celebration of pubs and brewing in Norwich, ends tomorrow, and has brought more people from across the country into pubs in the city.

The diamond jubilee weekend was also a chance for pubs to attract families with extra leisure time on their hands.

The European Championships kicked off last night and run into next month, so pubs are hoping that people in the city will want to watch the tournament, especially the England matches such as the team’s first game against France on Monday, with their friends and fellow supporters on the big screen at pubs in the city.

Pubs across Norwich have seen a surge in trade thanks to Norwich City playing in the Premiership last season. And publicans are hoping the Euros will provide a similar boost to business. Among the pubs showing the matches on their big screens are the Ketts Tavern in Ketts Hill and The Rose in Queens Road, both run by landlords Kevin and Dawn Hopkins.

Mrs Hopkins said there was even a television in the beer garden at The Ketts, and added: “For the Euros we are planning barbecues, weather permitting of course, and a ‘table reservation’ service.”

The Evening News has been urging people to support pubs in our Love your Local campaign.

  • Yellow Blood, thanks for the big up. I find the England games, shown in Norwich pubs, tends to bring the @rseholes out in force, not real England fans...but INGERLAND chavs, you're welcome to 'em' in the boozers of your choice.

  • nrg - Don't know of any beers at that price in either of the Ketts or Rose. Still, best you stay at home as I don't want to be stood near a miserable old moaner like you. Wormy - And that is why public houses are dying. Such a shame that the older generation like you had the opportunity to visit lots of fine pubs whereas us young'uns have not been granted such. At least you drinking at home means no-one else has to suffer your borish ways!

  • I prefer pubs like The Playhouse Bar which have no screens, machines or bouncers.
