City MP Simon Wright has asked the minister of care services what the government is doing to help identify and support carers in Norwich.

The Norwich South MP put a question to minister Paul Burstow after meeting staff from Norwich and District Carers Forum, of which he is vice president.

Liberal Democrat MP Mr Wright said: “Identifying and supporting carers of all ages is critical.

“The sacrifices they make to care for a friend or loved one is staggering, often giving up employment or retiring early. We need to recognise carers early so we can better help and support them.”

Responding to Mr Wright, Mr Burstow said the government was recruiting GP carers’ champions and volunteer carers’ ambassadors to help identify carers.

He said the aim was for those ambassadors and champions to also take the necessary actions to assess and provide the appropriate support for carers, so they get a break from their responsibilities.

Mr Wright said afterwards: “I welcome the minister’s response as I believe these efforts will help carers groups, the health service, local councils and government work together to support carers and help them enjoy a life outside of caring.”
