Nine points have been added to the driving licence of a Mile Cross man who is already banned from driving, after he crashed into the back of a car in Norwich whilst undertaking traffic in a bus lane.
Kiel Turner, of Mitre Court, appeared at Norwich Magistrates Court yesterday to be sentenced for two driving offences he had previously pleaded guilty to.
The two charges related to a crash in Dereham Road, at the junction with Hellesdon Road, on Friday, March 23 of this year.
Turner, 27, crashed his Citroen Saxo into the back of a Vauxhall Corsa as the driver of the Corsa merged with the main right-hand traffic lane, on the city centre-bound side of the road.
Judith Piggin, prosecuting, said a witness stood outside the nearby Kwikfit garage had estimated Turner was travelling at 50 to 55mph whilst driving in the left-hand bus lane.
Both cars were severely damaged in the crash, which happened around 11.30am, and both drivers suffered minor bruising and shock.
Ms Piggin said: “She was about halfway across the road and the Citroen Saxo was still driving at speed. The tyres locked up and he (the witness) said he saw white smoke and the wheels were totally stopped as the car screeched and collided, coming to rest outside The Gate House pub.”
Police then attended the crash and after carrying out checks discovered that Turner’s insurance was null and void as he had not notified his insurer that his licence was revoked on June 27, 2011.
Ms Piggin added: “The complainant’s vehicle was severely damaged and clearly the defendant had no insurance cover so it cost £1,700 to repair and made her feel quite shaky when driving, particularly at junctions.”
James Landles, in mitigation, said Turner insisted he was only driving at 30 to 35mph as he was intending to turn left at the junction to go to B&Q in Hellesdon.
Turner was ordered to contribute £300 towards compensation costs, the maximum that could be ordered due to his financial means, and told that when his licence was reactivated in April 2013 it would already have nine points on it.
