A campaign to rid graffiti from the centre of Norwich has been hailed a “huge success” with other parts of the city now being urged to tackle the problem.

The Evening News Graffitibusters campaign, supported by Norwich police along with Norwich City Council, the Central Norwich Citizens Forum and the Norwich City Centre Partnership, was launched earlier this year. It has already attracted scores of of volunteers, armed with brushes, to attend paint-out sessions.

The last organised paint out in the centre of Norwich took place last week and now the city centre Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) is looking to help people in other parts of the city by offering paint and PCSOs.

Julian Foster, chairman of the city centre’s Safer Neighbourhood Action Panel (SNAP) said: “Inspector Chris Brooks is talking to all officers within the SNAP areas immediately surrounding us in the city and saying to them if they want help removing graffiti we will supply them with paint as we’ve got plenty of paint now with lots of donations from people.

“We will be supplying that and PCSOs from our area will help meet with volunteers. We’re saying we think we’ve pretty much done our part of the city centre but we can sprerad it out to other Safer Neighbourhood areas to pick this up and to it themselves.”

As reported earlier this year graffiti remains a priority for the city centre Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) but long-term they will be looking for residents’ groups to take over the responsibility of tackling graffiti in their areas.

Mr Foster said: “We shall be looking to residents’ groups to take over from us when it is no longer a designated priority. “We shall make paint, brushes and rollers available to them as needed and we are looking for a volunteer project co-ordinator to oversee them.”

Mr Foster said the campaign in the city centre had been a “huge success” with mostly graffiti they had not got permission to remove from private buildings remaining.
