The 75-year-old’s push bike hit the roadworks, causing the man to fall into a hole on the cycle path outside City Academy Norwich in Bluebell Road at about 4.15pm today (Monday).

Police, ambulance and fire crews attended the scene.

A Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said two fire engines, one from Earlham and one from Norwich, attended the incident.

He said: “Crews rescued him using a short extension ladder and carried out casualty care and scene safety. The electricity board were requested to check exposed cables in the vicinity of the incident.”

A spokesman from the East of England Ambulance Service said the man had chest injuries and shortness of breath. He was treated at the scene and then taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

There were signs either end of the roadworks warning cyclists to dismount before passing the works. Barriers were set up around the hole.

  • With all those barriers and signs around, it's easy to see how he could miss them and fall in. What a danger to himself and others he really is. Still, you've got to laugh.
