A 22-year-old man from Norwich, who was arrested following the incident at Kartel in London Street on Sunday morning, was released on police bail today.

Officers were called to the club shortly before 4am on Sunday, following reports that a pane of glass in a conservatory roof had broken, resulting in shards falling on customers.

A number of people suffered minor or superficial injuries and five people were treated at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, and later released.

A man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of aggravated criminal damage and questioned by detectives at Wymondham police investigation centre.

He has been released on conditional bail until January 9 while inquiries continue.

A message posted on the nightclub’s Facebook today said the venue was likely to be closed for “a couple of days.”

It added: “The club workers and our patrons that night are all lucky, very lucky. Things could have been far more serious. The next few days will be spent securing the roof to see that this never happens again. “Unfortunately it seems that a friend of Kartel may have caused this, we have not spoken to this person yet but we are certain it was an accident and we are waiting for their side of the story. Hopefully there is a worthy explanation and more should be released about what happened in the next couple days. The safety of our customers has always been our number one priority and we are working hard to rectify the situation.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Det Sgt Sarah Knights at Norwich CID on 101, or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
