Norwich barber Ken Walker is celebrating after improving his health following a fantastic weight loss of four stone in under a year and dropping four trouser sizes.
Mr Walker, of Enzo’s hairdressers in Aylsham Road, decided to shed the stones just over a year ago because he had obstructive sleep apnoea – interrupted breathing during sleeping – and his specialist thought this would be eased if he could lose some weight.
Doctors within the Norwich area were referring patients to Slimming World groups as part of an NHS study. Mr Walker was referred to the Mile Cross Slimming World group.
He said: “I was a bit worried about going along to the group and felt uncomfortable at first but received a warm welcome. I found that each week I made new friends, learned new recipes and ideas and felt very supported by other members who wanted to lose weight too.”
Ken follows the Extra Easy plan which means he can eat unlimted amounts of pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat, fish and eggs as well as fruit and vegetables.
He said: “I have always enjoyed cooking but I now know how to cook food in a more healthy way and I can still enjoy all the meals I love, but now I can lose weight. The great thing is that I can eat to satisfy my appetite and I am never hungry, I can still eat out with my friends too.
“This isn’t a diet, it’s just a healthly lifestyle.”
“I had little energy before but now I have lost four stone I have much more energy to enjoy my life, family and friendships. I used to struggle to climb stairs and I can breathe more easily when I am out walking. I have less discomfort with my joints and I have just started to go to Zumba which I am really enjoying. I can also tie my shoes laces more easily!”
“I have dropped from size 42in waist to size 34in waist so have also enjoyed being able to buy new slimline clothes.
“I had a suit tailored for my daughter’s wedding and when I tried it on it was far too big and had to have it altered – on the day I had to wear braces as I had lost even more weight. I felt really proud on such a special day that I looked good and had really improved my health too.”
He added: “My customers have been really complimentary and really noticed the weight disappearing month after month. I have encouraged people to go along to join their local groups to get the support that I received.”
Just under a year later, Ken has reached his target weight loss of four stone.
