A synchronised swimming team made a splash to encourage people to take part in a charity fundraising event - with a special routine of underwater acrobatics.

Twenty-six swimmers from Norwich Sychronised Swimming Club performed a special Sport Relief Routine at the city's Hewett School in support of Sport Relief.

Saturday's routine, aimed at publicising the Sainsbury's Sport Relief Swimathon, which takes place next month, was put together by 18-year-old Jemma Poyner, who has been doing synchronised swimming for a decade.

She said: 'It was fun to try and do it with so many more people, I usually put together routines for 10 swimmers maximum, so having all the children involved was a challenge.

'I enjoyed trying to incorporate all three Sport Relief Games activities [swimming, cycling and running]; it was a real test of my creative skills.'

One of the youngest members was eight-year-old Olivia Forth from Norwich. The Eaton Primary School pupil has been in the club nearly a year and said 'I liked being lifted and pretending to win a race. It was a bit different to pretend to run when you are swimming.'

Lesley Poyner, the club's head coach, said: 'We like to do activities outside of synchronised swimming, we have held sponsored swims and once we did a land training session in s shop window in Norwich town centre.

'We were thrilled to get involved and it's been fun trying to come up with a suitable routine, I hope we can motivate lots of people in the East Region to enter the Sainsbury's Sport Relief Games.'

The Sainsbury's Sport Relief Games will take place from Friday, March 21 to Sunday, March 23. The swimathon is one of three challenges people are urged to take part in, with a mile run and a cycle also on offer.
