Organisers of the event, which is into its third year, have been handed £5,000 by Norwich Business Improvement District (BID) to help sell the festival to a national audience of real ale lovers.

The cash will pay for full page advertisements in 14 separate Camra regional publications including London, Sheffield, Nottingham, Leeds, Doncaster, Derby and Peterborough.

It will also pay for a half-page advert in Camra's April edition of What's Brewing.

Dawn Leeder, co-chairman of Norwich City of Ale, said: 'This is exactly what we need to take the good news about Norwich City of Ale to a national key stakeholder audience – over a quarter of a million Camra members and real ale lovers.

'We will use the money to attract new footfall into Norwich pubs and other outlets throughout the fine city and to further strengthen Norwich's reputation as the UK City of Ale.'

Stefan Gurney, executive director, Norwich BID, said the City of Ale event had promoted the city's pubs, local breweries and real ale.

He added: 'This festival helps the leisure sector increase customer and visitor numbers while growing the overall vibrancy of the city as a destination and keeping Norwich as the nationally recognised city of ale.'

Norwich City of Ale runs from May 23 to June 2, and is a celebration of local pubs serving local real ales made by local brewers.

Last year 45 pubs and 35 breweries took part and organisers are hoping it will be bigger and better this year.

The event fits in with the Norwich Evening News' Love Your Local campaign, which aims to get people back into pubs.

The next open meeting of Norwich City of Ale is Monday, February 25 at The Red Lion, Bishopgate, from 10am.
