Two brothers have helped raise £2,000 for a four-year-old girl fighting cancer by completing a marathon with just three weeks training.
The Tibbles brothers, personal trainers at Health Central at the Holiday Inn by Norwich Airport, ran 28 miles around the city on Sunday, February 26.
It was to support Sophie Taylor, whose family learned in January she had osteosarcoma in her knee and tumours which had spread to her lungs.
21-year-old Luis Tibbles said the pair wanted to do something to help as soon as they heard the news.
“We just wanted to raise as much awareness as possible,” he said. “We know Sophie because her mum and dad come to the health club we work at, and the girls always come in to swim.
“As soon as we found out we wanted to do something to help. It is just awful really. I just couldn’t believe it. You don’t expect something like that to happen to someone you know.”
Luis and his brother Josh, 19, completed the marathon in four hours 40 minutes, after walking the first three miles with around 55 others.
“Neither of us run,” said Luis. “We wanted to do it as quickly as possible and for peace of mind we did one 11 mile run and one 17 mile run before going into it on the day.
“We were bouncing ideas off each other and had a meeting point at the start of the route where we were joined by 55 people. We decided to walk the first three miles for people who aren’t able to run at all. That meant we could encourage a few more people to come along and join us.
“Around 25 people out of the 55 joined us to do a three mile run after that. Myself and Josh went on to complete around 28 miles in total.
“It was not really about us running a marathon - it was about raising as much money as possible.”
Sophie’ dad, Alex, said: “Luis and Josh have always looked out for the girls, encouraged them in their swimming and there is a mutual fondness between them and Evie and Sophie.
“The efforts they went to are typical of these amazing gentlemen who go out of their way to help others and encourage positivity and good wellbeing. We are really grateful for what they have done to support Sophie.”
